This active and tense competition comes to dominate all human thought and does not in the least open a way to free spiritual development. (Alexandr Solzhenitsyn, A World Split Apart, Commencement Address At Harvard, June 8, 1978)
Notes:
a) The powers of the gigantomachia operate through “domination” (< "dominus", "God"). The powers of the split, the gods and the giants, exist in eternal "tense competition". Allegiance to these powers then produces such tension throughout "human thought" and "contemporary worlds".
b) Over against these powers is "free spiritual development" - to which, however, the path is blocked: "This active and tense competition ... does not in the least open a way to free spiritual development."
