Nearly all readings of Hegel (beginning when he was still alive and lasting into the present, 170 years after his death) have presupposed that he argued either for a pure conceptualism or for a radical historicism. These are the famous right and left ‘wings’ of Hegelianism. All these readings have failed to see in Hegel an extended exposition and justification of the third possibility of the gigantomachia that would have both. This failure, in turn, results from the failure to exercise the third possibility in the reading of Hegel. But how begin to exercise a possibility which must come first? How begin again?
